It enables visitors to observe their behavior up close, making it a fascinating and enriching adventure.

Among the Uganda game parks, Golden monkey habituation is exclusively done in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Golden monkeys are one of the commonly searched for playful primates because of their impressive looks, characterized by bright golden-orange fur covering the back and some dark patches on the limbs and the face.

According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Mgahinga Gorilla Park is home to some of the 2000 to 4000 golden monkeys found in the Virunga Conservation Area.

The golden monkey habituation experience can be combined with mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda within Mgahinga National Park, since the park is home to about 30 endangered mountain gorillas.

After the morning breakfast, you will be driven to the park offices for a briefing, where you will receive the rules and regulations to follow.

Visitors must also present their habituation permits at the park headquarters, where they can also purchase them, and it is after the briefing that tracking for a habituated golden monkey family will start.

Golden Monkey Habituation Experience

After all the requirements for golden monkey habituation have been met, visitors are led into the forests. During the habituation experience, participants trek through the dense bamboo forests alongside experienced rangers and researchers.

Given the fact that Golden monkeys primarily inhabit bamboo forests within the Afro-montane zone, trekking starts by following the trails that are marked by the leftovers of bamboo shoots and some leaves to locate the golden monkey family.

Trekking continues until the golden monkey family that is under habituation is found, and at this point, trekkers can spend approximately four hours with these monkeys, closely observing their behaviour.

Unlike chimpanzee habituation, which starts in the morning and takes almost a full day, the golden monkey habituation experience takes around four hours and can be done in the morning or afternoon.

The whole habituation process takes several years to be completed.

While habituating, everyone is free to observe these monkeys closely, witnessing their playful jumps between trees and the heartwarming sight of mother monkeys tenderly nursing their little ones.

Expect to observe these monkey troops in order of their hierarchy, being led by the alpha males. You will also enjoy interesting stories from the park rangers that entail the conservation efforts and the fight against poaching.

By participating in this interesting activity, you provide valuable insights into the group dynamics, behavior, and conservation challenges of these playful monkeys.

By embarking on a Uganda tour to spend time with habituated golden monkeys, you will have greatly supported the local communities, the ongoing research, and the significant conservation effort.

This experience allows everyone to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature’s wonders when on a Uganda safari.

Other Interesting Activities That Can Be Combined with the Golden Monkey Habituation Experience

The following are other notable activities that you can also engage in.

Golden Monkey Trekking Experience (Tracking Golden Monkeys)

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the only protected area in Uganda that harbors the endangered golden monkeys, and the golden monkey trekking experience in the park’s tropical rainforest is an intriguing activity that you should not miss when on a Uganda safari

Early in the morning, visitors are driven to the park headquarters, where a briefing about the rules and regulations is given before heading into the forest to start trekking.

The activity involves trekking through the lush bamboo forests of Mgahinga Park in search of the golden monkey species in their natural habitat.

It also involves walking through the forest to observe these playful monkeys as they feed on bamboo shoots, ripe fruits from various trees, and insects, among other food sources.

After the briefing, park rangers will lead you into the jungle to begin trekking with Cercopithecus mitis kandti, offering a breathtaking experience that lasts from about 30 minutes to 3 hours.

Only individuals aged 15 and older are permitted to trek and observe a family of golden monkeys.

In Uganda, Golden monkey trekking takes place only in Mgahinga National Park. It can also be done in Volcanoes National Park of Rwanda, Virunga National Park, and Kahuzi-Biega National Park of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Of these national parks, Volcanoes National Park has a high population of these monkey species.

Unlike gorillas, which can be traced by following their last location, tracking habituated golden monkeys is done by following fresh leftovers like fresh bamboo shoots, fruits, and leaves.

During trekking, once a golden monkey troop is found, you will spend one hour observing these monkeys as they jump from one tree to another.

You will also be allowed to take photos of these primates as they go about their natural routines.

Golden monkey habituation is designed to cater to wildlife enthusiasts, thereby connecting them with Uganda’s unique wildlife.

Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Gorilla trekking is another fascinating activity where visitors on Gorilla trekking in Uganda get involved in trekking through the forest in search of gorillas, especially the habituated gorilla families.

Gorilla tracking starts early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. At this place, visitors are also given the rules and regulations about the activity.

A knowledgeable guide, who is familiar with the popular location of the habituated gorilla family, leads trackers into the forest after the briefing.

The activity takes around a minimum of one hour and a maximum of four hours trekking through the dense vegetation of Mgahinga National Park to locate a habituated gorilla family.

Once gorillas are found in their natural habitat, visitors are allowed to take photos but from a distance, and in the process, they should avoid using cameras with flashlights so as not to scare away the gorillas.

Visitors also get time to closely observe their behaviours and interact with guides for more information about the gorillas, an experience that creates lasting memories for a Uganda safari.

Guided Nature Walks in the Mgahinga Forest

This is another fascinating activity that involves visitors trekking through the forest to see and study different plant species.

During the guided nature walks, visitors also have the opportunity to see other wildlife species in the forest. Among the other wildlife species are buffalo, elephant, leopard, and giant forest hog, among others.

Bird Watching

According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority, more than 180 bird species can be found in Mgahinga Gorilla Park. Visitors on the golden monkey habituation experience have the opportunity to see some of the 14 endemic birds in this park.

Some of the bird species to see during bird watching include Dusky Turtle Dove, Rwenzori Turaco, and Kivu Ground Thrush, among others.

Mountain Climbing

In addition to the golden monkey habituation experience, there are mountains to climb, which include Mount Mgahinga, Mount Muhavura, and Mount Sabyinyo are volcanic mountains that can be climbed while on the safari in Mgahinga.

Cultural Tours

There are Batwa cultural experiences in Mgahinga Gorilla Park that offer an opportunity to experience the cultural heritage of the Batwa people. These people are known to be living in the forested areas.

In addition to the Batwa cultural tours, you can also have walking safaris around Kisoro, where you will have interesting interactions with locals, get used to the local community, and their cultures.

The Cost of a Golden Monkey Habituation Permit and a Golden Monkey Trekking Permit

A Golden monkey habituation permit is a must-have card for visitors to have access to the habituation experience and must be presented before engaging in habituation.

Golden Monkey Habituation Permit, Which Is A 4-hour Experience

Current fee for foreign non-residents: $100 per person

Foreign residents: $80 per person

East African Citizens: UGX 100,000 per person

Golden Monkey Trekking Permit, Which Is A 1-Hour Experience

Foreign non-citizens: $60 per person

Foreign residents: $50 per person

East African citizens: UGX 40,000 per person

The above prices for golden monkey trekking and golden monkey habituation permit do not include the park entrance fee, so the park entrance fee is $40 per person for foreign non-residents.

How To Book Golden Monkey Habituation Permits and Golden Monkey Trekking Permits?

Golden monkey trekking permits and golden monkey habituation permits should be purchased through trusted tour operators like Prime Safaris And Tours Ltd or Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

One can contact UWA or the trusted tour operator by telephone or email.

Golden monkey trekking permits and habituation permits can still be obtained from the Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters.

The Best Time for the Golden Monkey Habituation Process and Golden Monkey Trekking Safari

Golden monkey habituation and golden monkey trekking can be done year-round, but the best time for the two activities is during the two dry seasons.

In Uganda, short, drier months include December, January, and February, and long, drier months include June, July, August, and September.

During this time, there is less rainfall, which positively affects the activity because the hiking trails are passable and there is less foliage, giving one a chance to trace these primates.

How To Get to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for the Golden Monkey Experience?

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, the home to golden monkeys, is located in the southwestern part of Uganda, bordering Rwanda and the DR Congo, and can be accessed by both road and air transport means.

By Road Transport Means

Travelers using safari vehicles drive from Kampala via Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, and Kisoro, and then to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park headquarters. Volcano trekking in Mgahinga National Park Uganda offers one of the best hiking safari tours in Uganda.

This striking park in the south-western part of Uganda holds three volcanoes out of the 8 ranges of the Virunga Mountains, and these include Mount Sabinyo, Muhabura, and Mount Gahinga, all along the Uganda Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo border.

Visitors will choose a volcano to hike and each hike offers a unique hiking experience! We are there to guide you on which volcano to hike depending on your fitness level.

Uganda hiking safaris in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park are scenic guided hiking tours taking normally a whole day. During the hike, it’s possible to encounter some wildlife species in Mgahinga Park, such as golden monkeys, bushbucks, forest buffalos, forest elephants, bushpigs, and many bird species.

For a lovely mountain hiking tour in Mgahinga Park, visit from June to early September—dry months when rainfall is minimal. In wet months, the Mgahinga region receives heavy rainfall, which makes hiking trails challenging to hike.

In most cases, visitors that hike Mgahinga Gorilla Park volcanoes also do mountain gorilla trekking or track golden monkeys. Bird lovers can also enjoy bird watching since this park is a popular destination for Uganda birding safaris.

Never end your trip without enjoying the Batwa cultural experience—the most amazing cultural experience for tourists on Uganda tours.

The following are the different options for volcano climbing in Mgahinga Park:

Climbing Mount Gahinga

In the Kisoro District, just northwest of Rwanda stands Mount Gahinga, which marks the boundary between the southwest part of Uganda and Rwanda. Mount Gahinga, 3,474 meters tall, gets its name from a Kinyarwanda phrase meaning piles of stones. These stones are visible on the mountain’s slopes.

Hiking Mount Gahinga is the easiest in comparison with the other volcanoes, Mount Sabinyo and Mount Muhabura. During the Mount Gahinga hike, travelers will go through various amazing vegetation zones, including a bamboo forest—the main vegetation type on Mount Gahinga slopes.

On lucky days, travelers climbing Mount Gahinga can encounter some animal species in Mgahinga Park, for example, the forest elephant, giant warthogs, golden monkeys, plus countless beautiful bird species.

The summit of Mount Gahinga holds a beautiful large shallow crater swamp/swamp crater filled lake.

In most cases, hiking Mount Gahinga takes about six hours—to and from. As you go up Mount Gahinga, you’ll enjoy wonderful views of the park and Kisoro Town, as well as breathtaking views of the far-lava-dammed lakes in Kisoro District like Lake Mutanda and Lake Mulehe.

Note that hiking Mount Gahinga is the simplest mountain hiking adventure in this park. Guided nature hikes along the Gahinga trail start around 7 am through the recently reclaimed farmland.

Hiking Mount Sabinyo

The indigenous Kinyarwanda phrase Sabyinyo means “old man’s teeth,” and the mountain’s name comes from that origin. Mt. Sabyinyo is the oldest mountain in the Virunga Mountain range, with an elevation of over 3,669 meters above sea level.

Typically, the hiking adventure to the highest summit of Sabinyo volcano begins at 7 am at Ntebeko Park headquarters with a briefing. The senior guide will share with you the park facts, the history of the park, as well as the guidelines to follow while hiking.

Among the volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Mt. Sabinyo hikes offer the most challenging hiking experience. This mountain holds three peaks and visitors have to climb ladders to reach the summit. The most challenging ladders are at the last summit, 3669 m above sea level.

When you successfully reach Sabinyo’s 3rd peak, you’ll have a golden opportunity to be at the Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo border. This area holds giant lobelia and unique subalpine plants, making it an ideal place for photography.

Sabinyo volcano hike takes over 6-8 hours to and from but it’s worth undertaking. On this memorable hike, travelers will enjoy glorious views of Lake Mutanda, Mulehe Lake, Kisoro Town, Bunagana Town, as well as the gorgeous Sagitwe Caldera.

While in the montane forest zone, you are likely to spot wonderful wildlife species, including forest buffalos, golden monkeys, spotted hyenas, and even many colorful bird species, for example, the Rwenzori Turaco. This hike is done using the Sabinyo Gorge Trail.

Mt. Sabinyo borders Uganda’s Mgahinga Park and Virunga National Park of the Congo.

Hiking Mount Muhabura

Mount Muhabura, 4,127 m above sea level, is the tallest volcano in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Though it’s the highest among the three volcanoes in Mgahinga Park, it is easier to hike Mount Muhabura than Mt. Sabinyo. While hiking Mount Muhabura, travelers only climb ladders as they approach its summit, and this hike usually takes eight hours to and from the peak.

Just like other Mgahinga National Park volcano hiking expeditions, Mount Gahinga included, this thrill also starts at 7 am.

When visitors are climbing Mount Muhabura, they will enjoy impressive views of the entire park, the Rwenzori Mountains, Lake Edward, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park, and various Virunga mountains.

Kisoro Town and scenic lava-dammed lakes (Mulehe and Mutanda) are visible as well.

The summit of Mount Muhabura features a crater lake and its peak is shared between Uganda’s Mgahinga Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park.

Expect to encounter amazing jungle elephant footprints that cross along the hiking trail, mostly in the lower zones before bamboo forests.

Cost for Hiking Volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

The cost of climbing volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is charged by the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Your nationality determines how much you are to pay!

Non-Foreign Residents: $100

Foreign Residents: $80

The East African Citizens: 50,000 UGX.

Mgahinga Park volcano hiking fees include the park entrance fees.

Best Time to Hike Volcanoes in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Just like other Uganda safari activities, volcano climbing in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is open to visitors throughout the year. However, if time allows, you should hike the volcanoes in Mgahinga Park during the dry season: June to September & December to February.

Normally, the Virunga ranges in Mgahinga receive heavy rainfall in wet months (March-May) and this puts the hiking trails in poor conditions (slippery and muddy) but remains passable.

In the dry season, rainfall in Mgahinga NP is minimal; therefore, the hiking trails are fairly dry and wonderful to climb.

Travelers should note that other tourist activities in this park, such as mountain gorilla trekking, nature walks, birding, and golden monkey trekking, are also best done in the dry months.

Travel Tips When Climbing Volcanoes in Mgahinga National Park

For a successful hiking adventure in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, visitors hiking Mgahinga Park volcanoes should know these expert tips. This is because the cave is one of the key attractions in the park.

The Batwa were the original inhabitants of Mgahinga and Bwindi forests before they were gazetted as national parks.

They inhabited these forests about 500,000 years ago but left them undamaged because their activities in the forest caused a low impact on the natural environment.

This pygmoid tribe is believed to have dwelled in mountainous forested areas near Lake Kivu and Lake Edward.

The Batwa lived in huts and caves like the Garama and depended on the forest for shelter, food, herbal medicine, hunting animals, gathering fruits, and gathering honey.

The breathtaking Garama cave bears witness to the rich history of the Batwa, who lived in the cave for many generations before being resettled after Mgahinga was declared a national park, where the cave is located.

The Garama Cave

The Garama cave is a historic and significant lava cave in southwestern Uganda in Mgahinga NP that was historically used by the Batwa pygmies as a hiding place, council chamber, granary, and royal residence.

The cave entrance is approximately 3 km from the park headquarters in Ntebeko, and a hike to the cave takes about 3–4 hours.

Batwa guides are always available to lead you to the cave and explain the history of the Batwa, including how they survived in the cave and successfully attacked their neighbors from there.

Today, the Garama cave provides room for the Batwa cultural experiences, where some cultural shows, like Batwa music and dances, are performed.

Formation of the Garama Cave

The cave is believed to have been formed by the cooling and solidification of flowing lava, creating a lava tube.

Due to volcanic activities, this lava tube was created when the molten lava cooled and solidified outside while the molten lava inside continued to flow out until it drained away, creating a cave that the Batwa pygmies turned into their home.

The size of the Garama Cave

The Garama cave is 342 meters long and 14 meters deep beneath Mt. Mgahinga (Mount Gahinga) in northern Mgahinga NP, 3 km from the park headquarters.

It lies in the former farmland zone, which was earlier a forest when the cave was periodically occupied by the Batwa.

How Does the Garama Cave Exploration Start?

The Batwa Trail to the Garama cave starts at Ntebeko Visitor Centre or at the foot of Mount Muhavura, and it passes through dense forests of Mgahinga Gorilla NP, including bamboo thickets and the Hagenia zone, before reaching the cave for exploration.

This walk provides a deeper understanding of the Batwa people and their history related to the cave, since the guide will go on narrating stories about the traditional life of the Batwa and the use of the cave.

The trail leading to the cave is about 3-kilometer, and it takes about 3 to 4 hours to reach the entrance of the cave.

This cave is considered a living museum, where visitors will have a chance to learn many things about the Batwa people who formerly inhabited Mgahinga NP.

Historical Uses of the Garama Cave

The cave was used as a subterranean council chamber, which acted as a meeting place where the Batwa king would host meetings with the clan elders to pass laws and discuss important issues concerning their Batwa community.

It provided unforgettable performances, where the Batwa women performed traditional dances and sang songs.

It was a storage facility for food and other essential items used in the community.

The cave was a strategic base where the Batwa warriors would plan and launch surprise raids or attacks on their neighbors.

It acted as a hiding place for the fierce warriors after raiding their Bantu neighbors.

What To See in The Garama Cave?

Among the things to see inside the cave are

Batwa’s dancing hall, where women perform cultural dances

Bedrooms for adults and children

The conference room, from where the king would address his subjects for the next plot.

A podium where the king would stand to address his subjects

High population of bats

The smoke shaft within the cave.
